In a company an employee went to the HR and said “I can’t work here any longer, I want to quit this job”.
The HR asked “Why? What happened??”
The employee replied, ”the whole atmosphere is so toxic to my mind, there are people who are into a lot of Politics, who talk negative all the time, some spent most of their time gossiping then working. I don’t think I can handle this any longer.”
The HR said,” Ok, before you leave, you have to complete one task very sincerely.” The employee asked,” please tell me what can I do for you sir?”
HR said, ”I want you to take a glass of water filled to the brim and walk around the office area three times without spilling a single drop of water on the floor & after that you may leave the job.
It sounded weird to the employee. Then he thought of completing the task. So he took a glass full of water and walked three times around the office floor.
Then he came to the HR told that the task is done.
HR asked him, ”when you were walking around the office floor, did you saw any employee speaking bad about another employee or any gossips, any disturbances?
The employee replied, ”No”.
The HR than further asked, “Did you see any employee looking at another employee in a wrong manner?”
The employee replied,”No?”
Then the HR asked him ”you know why you were not able to see or listen anything? Because you were focused on the glass & water as you were not to spill a single drop.
The same goes with our life. When we focus on our priorities, we don’t have the time to see all the drama around us, the mistakes of others, gossip, politics, negativity etc.
The fact is, wherever we go we will find toxic people.
Changing of job cannot ensure freedom from such people and complications involved.
We should belive in few positive people who are around and trying to fight to overcome the complexity in work, we should do what we can positively change things around us.
But when we know that we’ve done our best and things still remain more or less the same than we should shift our focus to the glass of water.
Our priorities, our growth, our excellence and then we won’t be as much affected by the negativity around us.
But if it is absolutely beyond our capacity to handle, than we may need a change. Though we should be sure enough of knowing well that the new job will bring along fresh complexities as well which may be more or less challenging definitely.
