Robotic Surgery Technology by Fortis Hospital

Fortis Hospital, Mulund, one of the leading healthcare solution provider of Maharashtra, has installed Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical system, the most advanced Robotic surgery technology in the world.

The four-armed surgical robotic system will be used for the specialties of urology, oncology, gynaecology, head & neck and gastrointestinal surgery.

The surgical system was inaugurated in presence of Dr S Narayani, Zonal director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund; Dr Anil Heroor, senior consultant, surgical oncology & head of the department, colorectal surgery; Fortis Hospital, Mulund and Dr Pankaj Maheshwari, chief of urology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

The new Da Vinci Xi System acts as an extension of the doctor’s hands, allowing him or her to perform a surgery with pinpoint accuracy and very little damage to surrounding tissues. It will integrate skilled surgeons with advanced technology to aid in conducting complex surgical procedures. Designed for performing high precision surgeries, the surgical system will be operated by a specialized team of trained surgeons.

Speaking about the utility of the system, Dr Anil Heroor said, “Use of this robotic surgical system will dramatically increase precision, visualization and dexterity with which the surgical procedures will be conducted; greatly benefitting the physicians and the patients. For patients, this will mean smaller incisions, shorter recovery time, and reduced incidences of hospitalization and its cost implications.”

The advantages to the patient are manifold, this includes drastically reduced hospital stay, faster recovery, reduced risk of incision site infection, minimal blood loss, will enable preservation of healthy tissues, and significantly less scarring. The biggest advantage is these procedures are nearly pain-free with a drastic reduction in analgesic need.  The programme may also enable many procedures to be carried out on single day hospitalization.

Speaking further on patient advantages, Dr Pankaj Maheshwari said, “Patients who will undergo robotic surgery to correct their urological issues, mainly urological cancers and reconstructive procedures, will benefit immensely; the surgery will leave lesser scars, rapid return to continence and easier recovery of sexual function.
